...and enjoy the various Holiday's this time of year brings I'm compelled to write the first and most likely only News Post of 2013 on TRS.

It seems odd to see the old 2012 and beyond post on the front page still, and it makes me pause and take a look at how slow this site has gotten. It seems like only a short time ago that there were a dozen or more active members here on the forums. Now we are down to single digits, with new posts coming in sporadically and with longer and longer gaps of inactivity.

I know I will be criticized by the last few active members for writing this however I don't think it can be denied any longer. The Radiated Society is no more. No longer is this one of the few remaining beacons of hope in the desolate Wasteland, now it is merely the irradiated remains of a once great community that has fallen into disrepair and ruin. Those few of us still here are just holding on, trying to survive on the few remaining scraps that remain.

I don't know how much longer this site will be here, the cold embrace of the digital reaper grows ever closer and its icy hand will one day drag http://www.stgfc.com down into the dead domain advertisement hell that awaits all expired domains. So before that day comes I'd just like to say thank you to all the past and current members of The Radiated Society for all the fond memories. Thank you to the Fallout Community for all the years of entertainment, and finally a thank you to the Fallout Modding community for allowing me to be a part of two of the great projects of their time. Rest in peace FanMadeFallout, I'm still sad to this day you never made it. Also to Mutants Rising, which is still in development and going strong!

So for as long as it lasts I'll be here, watching out for any who get lost in the Wasteland and stumble into our community and either welcome them in or help them along on their way. As we all know nothing last forever and all good things come to an end, but there is one thing we all as Fallout Fans can count on never changing...war, because as you all know. "War never changes..."

Should we start a steam group and regroup there after the website fades away?

Steam Group sounds nice. :) I'd really like to stay in touch with you all if/when the site closes. I'll miss this place though. It is the first forum I ever joined. :) Many memories here.

I really hoped this sort of post would have summoned PK back to tell us it's all going to be okay, or at least let us know how long the site is going to be up.

Same, but he did say once that as long as there are a few members left he'll keep the site up. :)

I actually was talking to him about this very thing back in November at a friends wedding. He's been contemplating renewing the domain name, but I can shoot him a text today and tell him to get his ass in here to explain things.

Yes; I know I've been absent from posting over the past few months; and absent from any kind of larger role around here for much, much longer.

I have said before that the place would stay up as long as we had a few active members. I can't remember the last time we had any new members that stuck around regularly; Druid might've been the last.

It seems we have the following options:
1) Keep the forum up, keep things as they are, and wait for the last few members to wander off into the wastes

2) Archive everything. This could be done in phases - first preventing any new topics from starting, and then removing the ability to post in existing threads. We could have a final sticky thread for people to post contact information / organize groups on steam or wherever to keep in touch. I kinda like this approach since it will allow any old timers to wander back and see what became of the place. Of course, the archive would have a limited time; I'd probably only keep it up for a few years before it would blink out of existence.

3) Try rebooting the place. Let's be honest; the entire site needs a re-design from the ground up. The type of integrated system I would like to build for TRS would take a considerable amount of effort. I'm thinking it'd be easiest to start with WordPress or something similar for the interim; it'd be a way to get a new facade on the site without having to have a completely new system built. I'm not interested in pursing this alone, though.

So there you guys have it. Which option do you prefer? Are there any other options I haven't considered?

I don't want to be known as the instigator in the shut down of The Radiated Society, however I think I'd have to vote for option 2.

I'd rather the site stop with dignity, than sputter out or look desperate trying to reinvent itself. Let's do this with some class shall we?

How about a bit of 2 and 3? Close the old site and start anew with something different?

The forums, believe it or not, have historically not been a huge time sync for me compared with the rest of the site. The other pages were home-grown for the most part as far as coding goes. The software for the forums were always developed by others (ultimatebb at first, and then phpBB). Development of phpBB has seemed to come to a crawl; we're on 3 right now, and there aren't any plans for another major release any time soon.

That being said, for option 3, I always envisioned the solution including a fully home grown and integrated forum as well (I want a forum system that has zero page refreshes, for one). Chances are the forum would be one of the first things developed, though. But still, the fact remains that I don't want to undertake this project alone.

I could set the main page to just redirect to the forums or set up a new phpBB3 forum somewhere for a 'fresh' start, but I don't think either of these would change our current situation.

Well if we can come up with an idea for a new non/less-Fallout related one we might have a go.

heheheh, any specific ideas? We could include other games, but to be honest, I'm not much of a gamer anymore, so I wouldn't be the best person to make the call about what to include.

And what would the drawing point be?

Sorry if I'm being a bit of a downer on this idea, but I don't really think a new forum would solve our problems.

That what I'm trying to think of. It's just a suggestion. Wishful thinking as it might be.

noooooooooo don't take down this place!

sorry I haven't been reading this thread (i only check the general discussion. i didn't even know other rooms are active). i love you guys, and wanna continue having a forum. yes, sometimes it's dead in here, but it's not a reason to take it down.

If we do need to make changes, i'd go for option 3. I think i'd be able to help you with it pk.

Don't get me wrong I don't want this place to go away either, please do not think that is what I'm after. At the same time I feel bad knowing that PK is spending money to keep this place open.

I would like this place to stay, but with other communities Fallout and otherwise more active and the growing trend of Social Media sites luring people away from online forums, what do we have to offer new members?

Could we gain anymore users, the newer members stick around a few months then wonder off, and a lot of the older members have vanished as well.

I guess the real reason I brought it up in the first place is I don't want to try and log in one day to find the place is just gone for whatever reason and replaced by ad B.S.

I don't know what the solution is either, I know I don't know enough about it, or have the free time to help make a new site as PK has described and tried in the past. So I can't vote for that option as it would be unfair to with out being able to help implement it.

It's not like we're in a hurry either, we still have some time, well at least I think PK said it was another year or two before he had to renew the domain...

...right?

Yes; we do have some time yet before we have to decide for sure (I'd have to double-check to see when the domain registry is up, but it's not for a while yet).

And sorry I buggered off into the wastes again; I really gotta start trying to come here regularly.

jello, if you're serious about lending a hand, I could send you a message with some rough ideas and potential time commitments that would be required here. Then, you could decide if you're still interested, and if so, we could potentially go from there.

I think one of the things we could do, if we went with option 3, is be more integrated with social media (e.g., allow people to sign up/sign in with their Facebook or Twitter account; have an integrated social media group/page - something where news posted on the forum would get cross-posted to the FB page; etc.). I haven't spent a ton of time contemplating what all this would mean or all the ways which integration would be viable, but you get the idea.

It's a completely fair point to raise, Altra. I'm actually glad you brought it up, to be honest. It's been in the back of my mind for the last year or so, but couldn't quite bring myself around to breaching the topic.

Aw man, now I feel even worse about not being around more lately.

I definitely vote that we stick around. Although I think it would be great, I'm in no position to offer help on option 3, either, but I think option 1 is fine.
